Keeping healthy plants « Thread Started on Jun 28, 2005, 8:52pm »
So what does everyone do when adding new plants to their collection? To make sure that your new plant won't become sick and infect all your other plants. Do you isolate away from the main plants? For how long?
What if your getting a lot of new plants? What then?

Some people are very anal when it comes to quarantine but I personally do not quarantine at all unless obvious that a plant has problems but if a certain percentage of the plant is diseased then I just incinerate or return to retailer.

Well if a plant is obviously diseased then isolating it would make sense. I guess what i'm worrying about is not recognizing that there is a problem and then having to deal with it later on.
At the moment my plants all seem fine. I don't know if I know enough to see a minor problem until it becomes a major pain.
You know the old, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure saying?"
If I get cuttings of orchid cactus would I wipe them down with alcohol when I got them? Just in case there might be a problem with mealy bugs?
IF it has/had mealy then you will notice an obvious white stuff in the crevices. You could wipe them down if it makes you feel better but it probably is not necesary. It shouldn't be anyway. I personally have not received a diseased plant yet. Though on occasion I do get snails and pests like that with plants but nothing damaging usually.
